About Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
The DBT Skills Group is based on Marsha Linehan’s model for treatment of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT is a treatment designed to help emotionally sensitive individuals develop skills to cope with life’s stressors. The DBT Skills Group lasts for six months and covers four sets of skills to include: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. Mindfulness: Focuses on self-awareness and learning to access one’s internal wisdom, to become less reactive, and to allow choices for one’s self through acceptance and change. In this module we also teach skills for mindfulness meditation. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Focuses on learning how to get what one wants in interpersonal situations without sacrificing the relationship or one’s self-respect. This is particularly helpful for people who have trouble maintaining healthy relationships and healthy boundaries. Emotion Regulation: Focuses on identifying and describing emotions and understanding the function of emotions. These skills can be useful to people with emotional ups and downs, intense emotional reactions, depression, or anger problems. Distress Tolerance: Focuses on learning to tolerate distress and to survive crises without engaging in destructive or self-destructive behaviors.
